Roly has been involved in Para sport for close to 40 years, representing New Zealand at five Paralympic Games, two as an athlete (Stoke Mandeville 1984 and Seoul 1988) and three as a swim coach (Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016). As a Para swimmer he won one gold, three silver and two bronze medals for New Zealand. Whilst most recently he has become known for coaching New Zealand’s most successful Paralympian, 15x medallist, Sophie Pascoe, his work coaching disabled swimmers dates back nearly 20 years.
In his role as Para Swimming Performance Coach, Roly continues to work with Sophie Pascoe, as she aims for her fourth Paralympic Games, Tokyo 2020. He is also focussed on the Paralympians of tomorrow, spotting and working with new talent, focussed mostly in Christchurch and Auckland. He sets their training schedules and works with other providers to ensure the correct nutrition and other support services as required. Roly’s work supports the ‘Medal Winning Performances’ pillar of the PNZ Strategic Plan 2021 – 2035.
