Simon started coaching in the UK in 1996 while studying for his B.Ed. Hons (Major Aquatics). After moving to New Zealand, he continued coaching in the Hawkes Bay whilst a school teacher and then moved to Auckland in 2003 to work full time as a Swim Coach. He has had National record holders in all strokes and Individual Medley and has coached Paralympians to three Paralympic Games (Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016) and five Paralympic medals. During his career he has also coached a swimmer to the 2008 New Zealand Olympic Team, finishing 5th in 4×100 Men’s Medley Relay.
As Para Swimming Performance Coach, Simon is part of a team of coaches that works with current and emerging Paralympians. He works with them to set their strategies and training schedules and liaises with other key personnel to ensure correct nutrition, strength and conditioning and other performance support is provided to deliver performance. Simon’s supports the ‘Medal Winning Performances’ pillar within the PNZ Strategic Plan 2021 – 2035.
