STATEMENT - IPC decision on McLaren Report – Russian Paralympic Committee

Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) fully supports the decision of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to suspend National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Russia and subsequently all Russian Para-Athletes from the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The IPC have demonstrated strong leadership. The impact of the Russian state-sanctioned doping programme has been shocking and widespread. The McLaren Report findings were of serious concern for everyone committed to clean and honest sport. Compliance to the IPC’s Anti-Doping Code is vital to ensure that all Para-Athletes, Paralympians and aspiring Paralympians, are able to compete on a level competitive playing field.

PNZ reiterates the importance of protecting clean Para-Athletes and upholding the values of Paralympic sport. We are extremely fortunate in New Zealand to have an excellent National Anti-Doping Agency, Drug Free Sport New Zealand conduct regular testing of New Zealand athletes both within and out of competition and inform and educate all those involved with in New Zealand Sport.

Paralympics New Zealand has a zero tolerance towards doping and fully supports that all Nations should take the appropriate action to protect the rights of clean athletes. PNZ will now work with our Head Coaches and Games Team Management to assess any impact on events at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

PNZ will await the decision of a possible appeal by NPC Russia, with a deadline of 28 August.
