New Zealand at the Arnhem 1980 Paralympic Games

  • 17 Kiwi Paralympians, including 7 returning Paralympians and 10 debutants The New Zealand Paralympic Team included 12 male and 5 female Paralympians
  • 4 Para sports competed in – Para archery, Para athletics, Shooting Para sport, Para swimming – across the 13 Para sports featured at Arnhem 1980
  • 19 medals won by New Zealand – 7 GOLD, 6 SILVER and 6 BRONZE
  • 13 of the 19 medals won were in Para athletic events
  • Neroli Fairhall – Paralympian #17 won the wheelchair women’s doubles Para archery competition and then went on to compete at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where she finished 35th out of 56. She is the only Para athlete to compete at both the Paralympic and Olympic Games.
  • 1,653 Paralympians from 42 countries competed in 13 Para sports in Arnhem 1980
  • 19th in the world overall medal table*

* By IPC convention, the medal standings are ordered by the number of gold medals which the Para athletes from a nation have won. The number of silver medals is taken into consideration next and then the number of bronze medals. If NPCs are still tied, equal ranking is given and they are listed alphabetically by IPC country code. The same convention is used by the IOC.
