2019 World Para Swimming Championships Day 3: Golden run continues for Pascoe and best performance from McLean

Sophie Pascoe of New Zealand celebrates gold in the Women's 100m Butterfly S9 final

SOPHIE PASCOE’S golden run at the World Para Swimming Championships has continued with the 26-year-old claiming her 11th World Title, setting a Championship Record of 1:04.35 in the Women’s S9 100m Butterfly.

Swimming in her favored event Pascoe was quickly out to a body length ahead of the chasing pack before stretching her lead to just under 3 and a half seconds at the final touch.

HAMISH MCLEAN, who was one of the youngest in the SM6 200m Individual Medley, set a new Oceania Record of 2:53.06, while wiping over 3 seconds off his own pre-meet Personal Best to finish in sixth.

The Wanaka athlete, who swims out of Christchurch, had already lowered the Oceania Record and set a new PB in the heat, then returned to go even faster in the final, lowering it by a further 2 and a half seconds.

“It went well. I’m pretty stoked with the time. I had a different process for tonight and it obviously paid off, yeah I’m pretty stoked with the time in general.“

“It was a pretty tight race with some of the other competitors, it probably wasn’t the best executed (on my part) but something to learn from so I can go even faster next time.“

The result sees McLean record his third PB in three events. “I suppose from all the hard work, the training is providing some results, so I’m looking forward to next year,“ he added.

CHRIS ARBUTHNOTT also produced a personal best, dropping one point four seconds off his previous best in the S9 100m Butterfly and finished agonisingly one spot outside the finals in a time of 1:02.43.

CELYN EDWARDS finished 8th in the S8 100m Butterfly in a time of 1.09:04.
