Paralympian #185 Nathan Smith passed away on Saturday 9 September 2023, aged 47, after a battle with cancer.

Nathan represented New Zealand at the London 2012 Paralympic Games in Para cycling. He took up the sport after losing his leg when hit by a car aged 27.

Nathan was an incredibly talented and competitive sportsperson, and a well-loved member of the Paralympic Team. A dear friend to many, the Para cycling community will remember him with great fondness.

The team remember him as a natural leader, bringing kindness and fun to team culture. One team member described him as “one of the nicest and most fun people you could ever hope to meet.”

Our thoughts are with Nathan’s wife Crystal, children Saskia, Ashton, and Lucia, his mum Marian and his wider family and friends.

Funeral service for Nathan Smith

Invited family and friends will celebrate Nathan’s life on Monday 18 September at 10.30am, followed by a private cremation.

Nathan was well known and loved by so many, and the family invite the wider community to participate in his service by joining the livestream from 10.20am on Monday.

In preference to flowers, please consider a donation to the amazing Hospice Taranaki.
