Following Friday’s (22 January 2021) media speculation about the cancellation of Tokyo 2020 which was triggered by an anonymous source offering personal views, Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) has made the following statement:

PNZ is aware of media reports published on Friday 22 January 2021 in which it was claimed the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be cancelled.

In response to this the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), IOC, Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee have once again stated their full commitment to delivering safe and secure Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In New Zealand, we will continue to work closely with the New Zealand Government, Sport NZ, High Performance Sport NZ, National Sports Organisations and our other partners to deliver a New Zealand Paralympic Team campaign with the safety of Para athletes and support staff members as our priority.

We know that the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will be different to previous Paralympics however we trust in Tokyo 2020, the IOC and the IPC to continue to work towards the commitments they have made to deliver a Paralympics in a COVID-safe environment.
