GC 2018 Day 4 Wrap – Edwards smashes PB by 9.75s

GC 2018 Day 4 Edwards

Celyn Edwards has smashed his personal best time in the men’s SM7 200m individual medley today by a staggering 9.75 seconds.

He finished 4th in the final in a time of 2:35.07.

“I’m really frustrated to miss out on a medal,“ says Edwards.

Edwards was in third place with 20m to go before being passed by Canadian Philippe Vachon. It was an Australian double with Jesss Aungles and Blake Cochrane taking the gold and silver.

Coming into the competition Edwards personal best was 2.44.82s, smashing that time in his morning heat with a 2:40.28s.

“I have no idea where those times came from, but I’ve been working really hard on my backstroke and a good race plan here with Roly (coach) and my coach Ben Close back home in Christchurch.“

Daniel Hunter featured in the men’s 100m freestyle final, finishing 8th in 49.30s.

“The goal was to go 48s, I’m still stoked with the time, the focus is now on the 50m freestyle tomorrow,“ Hunter said after the final.

Last night Hunter swam a new personal best and national record of 49.11s to sneak into the final.

Scotsman Duncan Scott caused an upset by winning gold in 48.02 over Chad le Clos and Kyle Chambers who shared the silver in a dead heat. Pre-race favourite Cameron McEvoy finished 4th.

In the women’s 100m freestyle semi-finals, Carina Doyle finished the best of the kiwi trio in 12th (56.18) followed by Laticia Transom, 13th (56.26) and Georgia Marris, 16th.

Marris’ time of 56.48s was a new personal best.

“I was pretty excited to swim another semi-final alongside my team mates, I talked to my coach this morning after my swim for things to work on tonight, i’m happy with that PB,“ says Marris.

Earlier in the day, Bobbi Gichard finished 13th overall in the women’s 200m backstroke (2:17.88) while Bronagh Ryan placed 17th overall in the women’s 100m breaststroke (1.10.78).
