Jana Rangooni wins Emerging Director Award in governance by the Institute of Directors

Jana Rangooni

Paralympics New Zealand board member, Jana Rangooni, has been recognised as an emerging talent in governance by the Institute of Directors’ (IoD).

The Institute of Directors Bay of Plenty Branch announced its Emerging Director Award yesterday (23 August 2018).
Jana Rangooni, who has extensive experience in media and broadcasting, is a Chartered Member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors and Trustee of the New Zealand Music Foundation.

Also Chief Executive Officer for the Radio Broadcasters Association, Jana Rangooni said she understood the principles of good governance and the importance of skills and experience people have to bring to a board table.
But how much more there was to know about being a director was surprising.

“The need to learn and understand so many new areas, and the value and importance of your other personal skills has been a wakeup call.“

She says that she as someone who knew about finance, she had to step up recently to a finance and risk committee.? “I had to join this group for some months, as I was the most experienced in finance Then I was asked to stay on the committee. I would never have put my hand up for that, unless it had been such an emergency, but I learnt a lot and realised how much value I could bring.“

Jana said that in the three years she had been on the board of Paralympics NZ, she has learnt a lot about high performance sport and sport administration.

“I have had to learn about things like high performance sport, the administration of sport, what it takes to win medals, health and safety issues around an International Olympic/Paralympic Games, as well as how valuable it is to be able to ask questions when you don’t understand something,“

She had also learnt to “challenge constructively when something doesn’t seem right, and listen to and work with fellow board members who may have completely different perspectives and ways of operating“.

“I have also learnt to build the respect of people who may not have even wanted you at the table,“ she says.
In seeking the Award, Jana said she was committed to building a reputation as someone who will be a valuable director.
Jana receives an award package valued at $3,500, of which $2,000 can be used for IoD professional development. The package includes an IoD membership and mentoring with an experienced director for 12 months, a place on the BoP branch Institute of Directors committee, and an Emerging Director position with a selected placement board.
The IoD Bay of Plenty Branch Emerging Director Award was established to foster upcoming talent in governance through mentoring, formal training, and access to leading directors at events across the region.

The Emerging Director Award is a prestigious award, presented to those that are seeking to better their knowledge and growth in the governance area. The award recognises individuals that have the potential to add considerable value to governance in the future. Judging is comprehensive and candidates must meet clearly defined principles laid down by the Institute of Directors.
