Martlew targets success in Montreal

Scott Martlew sits in a canoe at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Paralympian #198 Scott Martlew PLY is set to make his first international appearance of 2026 when he competes at the ICF Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Cup in Montreal, Canada from 10–13 July (NZT).

Trailblazing Scott became New Zealand’s first Paralympic Para canoe athlete when competing at Rio 2016. The experienced three-time Paralympian will be aiming to make a strong start to his international season in Montreal as he builds towards the ICF Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships in Poznań, Poland, from 26–30 August.

New Zealand enjoyed an encouraging start to the 2026 World Cup campaign in Brandenburg, Germany in May with rising Para canoeist Finn Murphy claiming silver in the Men’s KL3 200m and Paralympian #231 Peter Cowan finishing fifth in the Men’s VL3 200m. Scott will be looking to maintain that momentum when he takes to the water at Montreal’s Olympic Basin at Parc Jean-Drapeau.

The Christchurch-based paddler has consistently performed on the world stage. An above-the-knee amputee, he finished eighth in the Men’s KL3 200m at Rio 2016 before narrowly missing the podium with fourth place in the Men’s KL2 200m at Tokyo 2020. He followed that with a fifth-place finish in the same event at Paris 2024

The 33-year-old also has an impressive record at World Championships and World Cup level. Last year he placed fourth in the Men’s KL2 200m at the ICF Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships in Milan, missing the podium by just 0.06 seconds.

Scott is the sole New Zealand Para canoe athlete selected to compete in Montreal.
