Outward Bound: Activate, for Para athletes

Take a facilitated, transformative journey towards becoming the best version of you! This Outward Bound course is funded for Para athletes to take part.

What is Activate?

Activate is an adapted course to enable those aged 18+ with a physical disability to experience the challenge and adventure of an Outward Bound course. Outward Bound have designed this course to assist students to test their boundaries and build self-awareness, resilience, confidence and connection to others, and confidence.

During your 8 days in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, you’ll take part in challenges to help you build the tools to achieve whatever goals you set for yourself. Activities include sailing, high ropes, camping and more!

Para athlete requirements for Outward Bound: Activate

The course will include 10 participants who have a physical disability are accompanied by four support workers and three Outward Bound instructors.

The course takes place Thursday 15 – Thursday 22 Feb 2024.

In partnership with Outward Bound, Paralympics New Zealand are able to offer 6 places to people with a physical disability including one place for a person with visual impairment. (All places allocated for wheelchair users have been taken on this course.)

All participants must be:

  • 18+ years of age
  • Able to communicate clearly and have no intellectual disability
  • Able to travel to and from the course independently
  • Able to participate in a full day of physical activity with rest breaks
  • Comfortable in and around the water, including having head under – lifejackets available
  • Able to meet general Outward Bound screening guidelines
  • Willing to give things a go

Outward Bound funding for Para athletes

Outward Bound donors have generously fully funded this course. However, students must cover the cost of travel to and from Picton and the cost of completing an Outward Bound medical form with their doctor or nurse practitioner.

Travel

The course will start and finish in Picton. Please arrange your own travel to and from Picton.
