Ed Bickerstaff #40

Paralympian Ed Bickerstaff standing with his skis

Born in Howick, Ed is a New Zealand Para alpine skier. He made his Paralympic debut at the Innsbruck 1984 Paralympic Winter Games. It was only the second time that New Zealand had a team at the Paralympic Winter Games and it still remains one of the largest New Zealand Paralympic Teams to compete at a Paralympic Winter Games to date. Ed competed in the LW6/8 class as he was born with a right arm deficiency.

In total, Ed went on to compete at 4 consecutive Paralympic Games: Innsbruck 1984, Innsbruck 1988, Albertville 1992 and Lillehammer 1994. This is an historical achievement, only equalled by Paralympian #158 Adam Hall. In addition, Ed also took part in the 1986 and 1990 Disabled Ski World Championships.

Ed now lives in Otago and is still very active. In 2020 he started an incredible adventure along with 100 other cyclists, crossing New Zealand on his bike, from East Cape Lighthouse to Cape Egmont Lighthouse, not less than 1,030 km through very remote locations.
