Since losing his left leg in a motorcycle accident at the age of 20, Marty has simply refused to let his disability slow him down or stop him living life to the max. In an astonishing sporting career, Marty is a two-time Paralympian, and one of the few Para athletes who has represented New Zealand at both a winter and summer Paralympic Games.
He made his Paralympic Games debut as a Para alpine skier, competing in four events at the Innsbruck 1984 Paralympic Winter Games. Fast forward 16 years and Marty showed his versatility by competing alongside Paralympian #121 Phil Edwards and #133 Garth Reynolds in the Mixed Three Person Sonar in the sport of Para sailing at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.
Active Nelson-based Marty is also a national knee boarding champion, biked some of our toughest mountain trails and competed at the New Zealand Marathon Canoeing Championships. He is also a passionate golfer.
Marty received his ‘numbered’ Paralympic pin as part of The Celebration Project in Wellington in November 2020.
