Philip Read #12

Phil Read, New Zealand Paralympian

Originally from Middlemarch and relocating to Mosgiel following his accident, Philip was a member of New Zealand’s very first Paralympic Team competing at the Tel Aviv 1968 Paralympic Games. Philip competed in Para table tennis. In the Singles A1 he went through to the quarter finals. Philip also participated in the Doubles with Paralympian #1 Norman Brown. They lost their first game against the British team.

Philip and Miriam had a wonderful marriage for 40 years –  he was a step dad to 3 children, becoming a treasured grandad to 7, and then a great grandad for two wee boys.

“Philby“ was a valuable member of the Fulton Hogan office team for many years and enjoyed genealogy research and growing fruiting trees, especially mandarins on his retirement.

Philip passed away in 2018 at the age of 70.

Philip was represented by his family to receive his ‘numbered’ Paralympic pin as part of The Celebration Project in Dunedin in February 2021.
