What is our commercial partnership philosophy?

Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) is passionate about partnering with great people and great brands.

Over the past few years, we have built a strong family of creative, passionate and ambitious commercial partners that share our value system and with whom we have great fun! In fact, the word “sponsor” is banned at PNZ. We know that for these relationships to be successful, we must work together in true partnership and understand each other’s business challenges and objectives.

Why do we work with commercial partners?

PNZ is very grateful to receive government funding through High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ) to pay for the training of our elite Para athletes and about 1/3rd of our Paralympic Games campaign costs.

However, everything else we do, including covering the remaining 2/3rds of Games costs and delivering against the community development objectives in our ‘Towards 2020’ Strategic Plan is supported by government funding, grants from trusts and foundations, donations, commercial partnerships and gifts in wills.

What do we offer to commercial partners?

The PNZ Spirit of Gold® Initiative is an award-winning and successful commercial and marketing programme. The term was carefully chosen as a way to communicate PNZ’s dual purpose “spirit” is used to represent ‘community development’ and “gold” to represents ‘high performance success’.

The programme is the foundation for all PNZ’s commercial partnerships, providing a transparent structure of rights and benefits. It also creates the backbone of a PNZ-led communication and events strategy. Added to this, following an exceptionally successful broadcast of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, which reached 2.2m kiwis, our broadcast partners TVNZ and Attitude have announced a new 3-year deal which is set to bring more Para sport than ever to New Zealanders. 1.6m kiwis watched the live and free-to-air broadcast of the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

Live and free-to-air coverage is also planned for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games (August 2020) and several significant pinnacle Para sport events in between.

PNZ is incredibly proud of the Spirit of Gold® Initiative and is thrilled to have been recognised at several awards.
