Steven lost his leg in 1994, after a car accident, which left his right leg amputated below the knee. He skied in the highly competitive LW4 group, which is among the toughest within world disabled skiing. Steve made his Paralympic debut at the Nagano 1998 Paralympic Winter Games.
He took bronze in the Men’s Giant Slalom. 4 years later, Steven represented New Zealand again, at the 2002 Paralympic Games in Salt Lake City with Rachael Battersby. The pair were the sole members of the New Zealand Paralympic Team in 2002. Between them they took home 6 medals, Steven winning gold in the Men’s Giant Slalom, and 2 bronze in both the Men’s Super-G and Downhill. Skiing is still Steve’s passion and he tries to get on the slopes as much as possible. He also enjoys mountain biking and road cycling. Steven currently works as Project and Maintenance Manager in a tree nursery where he has been for the last ten years.
