Dave lived in Christchurch when he had his accident at the age of 31, falling from a tree. This fall left him as a paraplegic, only one week before the birth of his son. A few years later, Dave started Shooting Para sport. He had set up a shooting range across his living room with the target hooked into the stairs. Dave represented New Zealand at the Arnhem 1980 Paralympic Games in the Netherlands. He won a bronze medal in the Mixed Air Pistol 2-5. Dave passed away in 2018.
