Kaye Kay-Smith #32

Kaye Kay-Smith running

Kaye is a New Zealand Paralympian from the Kapiti Coast. She is visually impaired and represented New Zealand at the Arnhem 1980 Paralympic Games in Holland. Known as Kaye Firth at that time, she competed in both Para athletics and Para swimming. Kaye won a gold medal in the Pentathlon B. It is a combination of several events: 100m and 400m track run, long jump, shot put, and 100m freestyle swimming. Pentathlon is no longer part of the Paralympic Games sports programme. 

Kaye also competed in the Track and Field World Championships in Sweden 1986. She won silver in the 1500m and 3000m and the bronze in the 800m events.

She ran two World Marathon Championships in Japan: in 1992 in Miyazaki where she won gold and in 1996 in Tokyo where she finished 2nd.

Kaye also competed in Australia in tandem cycling.

Kaye was also very involved in Para sport in her community, especially in Goalball and blind cricket.

Kaye works for Blind Low Vision Kapiti since 2018.

Kaye received her ‘numbered’ Paralympic pin as part of The Celebration Project in Wellington in November 2020.
