Paralympian Profile

Tim Prendergast #132

Tim Prendergast, New Zealand Paralympian

A middle distance runner, Tim Prendergast has represented his native New Zealand at 4 consecutive Paralympic Games.

At the age of 8 Tim began losing his central vision and within several years was legally blind. Despite his rapidly deteriorating sight and troubles coming to terms with his impairment, Tim still had a passion for sports and found a real enjoyment in running.

Tim won 2 silver medals at his first Paralympic Games in Sydney 2000 – the Men’s 1500m T13 and Men’s 800m T13.

At the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games, Tim produced an outstanding run to claim gold in the 800 metres T13. Despite finishing outside of the medals in both the 1500m and 5000m disciplines at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, Tim continued to be a full-time athlete.

Tim spends time frequently working with schools and other community organisations. He also works for the Youth Sport Trust as an Athlete Mentor and he engages and inspires young people with the power of his outstanding story. By sharing his experiences in life and sport, Tim aims to encourage young people to follow their dreams and become the best that they can be.

Today, Tim still holds several NZ national records in Para athletics.

Tim is now working in London as Personal Development Manager for Santander UK.
