Morice Hennessy QSM #51

Morice Hennessy, New Zealand Paralympian

In 1975 Morice had a tractor accident in Wakefield near Nelson which resulted in him becoming a paraplegic.

He competed at two Paralympic Games: Stoke Mandeville 1984 and Seoul 1988. He had the honour of being the flag bearer for the New Zealand Paralympic Team at the opening ceremony in 1988 in front of 100,000 people. Morice specialised in Para athletics long distance wheelchair races. He competed in the 800m, 5km, 10km and marathon events.

After his international Para sport retirement, Morice continued competing in the annual Japan Oita international wheelchair marathons. In 1994 he took up the challenge to paddle down the river Nile with the New Zealand Para Boat Team.

Morice retired from full time employment six years ago but is still involved in his small business interests. He is an active member of Table Tennis Nelson and coaches adaptive table tennis which caters for people with disabilities.

Morice received his ‘numbered’ Paralympic pin as part of The Celebration Project in Wellington in November 2020.
